APABA-DC's Spotlight on Local Non-Profit Organizations (Oct. 15)

We are fortunate to live in an area where many local non-profit organizations are serving local communities in many ways, including providing immigration-related legal advice, helping asylum seekers and asylees acclimate to their new country, and providing direct services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. If you are interested in learning about the work of local nonprofits and volunteer opportunities for both lawyers and non-lawyers and don't know where to start, join APABA-DC in its Spotlight on Local Non-Profit Organizations. The event will be a virtual Zoom discussion held on Thursday, October 15th at 6:00pm EST with representatives from several local organizations who will discuss their work and volunteer opportunities. This event is co-sponsored by the Asian Pacific American Law Students Associations (APALSA) of American University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, University of Maryland, and University of Virginia; the Capital Area Muslim Bar Association (CAMBA); and the South Asian Bar Association of Washington, D.C. (SABA-DC).

The confirmed organizations and presenters include:

o Sookyung Oh, Director, National Korean American Service & Education Consortium - Virginia (NAKASEC - VA): community advocacy for Asian Americans, immigration legal services, and voter protection

o Holly Leon-Lierman, Community Building Program Manager, and Senay Emmanuel, Community Building Program Coordinator, AsylumWorks: direct services for asylum seekers including education and job readiness training

o Youmna Ansari, Outreach & Training Program Manager, Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project (DVRP): direct services to API survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, community outreach, and training & technical assistance

Date: Thursday, October 15

Time: 6:00pm EST
