We're pleased to share an invitation for APABA-DC attorneys to learn more about the DC Appleseed Center for Law and Justice’s democracy work and get involved in pro bono work. For thirty years, DC Appleseed has been a leading advocate for the District’s right to local autonomy and self-governance. Because DC is a federal district (not a state) the city is uniquely and directly impacted by changes in federal leadership. This is true even though DC residents do not have voting representation in Congress. Within the past several years, Congress more directly and frequently challenged DC’s rights to self-governance. Challenges are expected to increase and intensify over the next several years. DC Appleseed is currently forming a DC Autonomy Legal Network to defend against challenges to the Home Rule Act or similar threats. Pro bono support from talented attorneys can help DC Appleseed defend Home Rule and ensure DC’s laws continue to reflect the values of its voters and residents. DC Appleseed invites APABA-DC members to join a Lunch and Learn on Wednesday, February 19th from 12:30-1:30 pm. Interested individuals can sign up HERE. At the lunch-and-learn, DC Appleseed will discuss: The basics of the Home Rule Act, other relevant laws, and anticipated threats to DC's limited right to self-governance. Specific opportunities for attorneys to get involved in ensuring District residents retain a voice in local government. The support DC Appleseed provides to ensure you can competently and confidently serve the District and its residents during this turbulent time. Please note: No prior experience or familiarity with DC’s Home Rule Act is required.
