    Registration is closed

Please join APABA-DC Working Parents Forum's (WPF) for a Washington Spirit game on Saturday April 26th at 1pm! The Spirit will be playing against Gotham FC at Audi Field in Washington DC.

Currently, we have 25 seats held for us where we can sit together in a group. Tickets are $30 per person. Seats are first come, first served. Once registered, a WPF Co-Chair will contact you for payment for your tickets.

If we are able to have at least 20 attendees sign up for this event, we will be able to have Matchday Memory experiences that will be fun for kids (and adults)!

    - The kids get to hype up the Washington Spirit players in the team’s tunnel as they make their way out of the locker room and on to the field for warmups.

    - The Spirit mascot, Penelope Kix, will also come visit us at our seats and take photos with us!

    - APABA-DC will be mentioned on the jumbotron during halftime.

If we have more attendees, we may be able to have other experiences, such as a group post-game photo on the field.

Members, please register to join us at this fun family event and bring your friends and family!

ALLY EVENT: VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION - Virtual Employee Hiring & Onboarding Clinic

(co-sponsored by the D.C. Bar and Covington)

    Date & Time: Tuesday, April 29th from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

    Location: Virtual Clinic via Zoom

APABA-DC is pleased to share this pro bono opportunity offered through the generosity of the D.C. Bar and Covington. Please note: registration is directly through the D.C. Bar.

Nonprofits and small businesses often struggle to comply with their obligations under local and federal employment laws; for organizations hiring their first employees, the learning curve and compliance burdens can seem overwhelming.

At this Virtual legal clinic, local organizations will have the chance to meet one-on-one with volunteer attorney teams to complete a structured checklist of hiring and on-boarding related considerations. The goal of the clinic is to educate and familiarize managers with their employer-side obligations—on topics including “Ban the Box” rules, offer letters, Notice of Hire forms, I-9 verification, and benefits enrollment—and to spot issues relating to their current employment practices. Volunteers are not expected to provide on-going representation to their organization after the event.

Prior to the clinic, attorneys will receive introductory information about the organization they'll be assisting and relevant background documents, including a copy of the clinic checklist. On the day of the clinic, attorneys from Covington will host a virtual training and orientation session before client consultations begin.

PLEASE NOTE: Registration is directly through the D.C. Bar. Please register here: D.C. Bar Virtual Volunteer Clinic Registration

Please contact dmaxwell@dcbar.org if you have any questions.

APABA-DC is proud to be a co-sponsor of the "Washington, D.C. Stands for the Rule of Law" gathering held on National Law Day, May 1st, alongside similar gatherings all across the country. Come join with fellow attorneys, other members of the legal community, and concerned citizens on the steps of the Supreme Court to show our commitment to the rule of law.

Representation matters. Your presence matters. Together alongside Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) and other DC voluntary bar associations (such as WBA-DC, SABA-DC, HBA-DC, WLG and Alliance for Justice), we'll join with legal professionals across the country in a unified national action to defend the cornerstones of American democracy.

Please register to let us know if you will be attending, as we will do our best to coordinate a way where we can find fellow APABA-DC members. You may also register directly with L4GG (either in addition to or separately from registering with APABA-DC): L4GG Registration Link

    May 2, 2025 @ 12:30pm - 1:30pm

Do You Parent Like a Lawyer? Simple Actions to Reduce the Stress of Being a Lawyer Parent: Have you ever thought about how your legal training impacts your parenting style? While parenting in itself can be a challenging endeavor, certain aspects of legal training, and even the day-to-day practice of law, can create additional stressors that you might not even be aware of! In this workshop, you'll learn simple, practical actions you can take to reduce unnecessary stress, strengthen your connection with your kids, and even improve your children's behavior, moods, and attitudes.

Please register here to receive the Zoom link for the virtual workshop. Link will be emailed out prior to the event. Please come with your questions and concerns as our goal is for this to be an interactive session.

About the Speaker: Rachel Bailey is a Parenting Specialist who has been serving families for over a decade. Besides being a mother of two, she also has a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology, a certification in Positive Discipline, and has provided services as an ADHD Coach, in-home mentor, and therapist. Through her podcast, programs, and services Rachel teaches parents hands-on tools for raising resilient, confident children and bringing flexibility, peace, and connection to families.

Each year, APABA-DC invites a cast of federal, state, and local judges to participate in a reenactment of cases of particular significance to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. The case this year is Chy Lung v. Freeman, an 1875 Supreme Court case about 22 Chinese women who sailed to San Francisco from China. They were detained by Californian immigration authorities as “lewd women”, because they had traveled without their husbands. We picked this case because of the familiar issues of immigration and federalism still relevant today.

Both the reenactment and the reception afterwards will be at the D.C. Court of Appeals Historic Courthouse.  Please plan to arrive at the Courthouse no later than 5:45 pm to enter the building.  The door to the ceremonial courtroom will open shortly after 6 pm.

Join the APABA-DC Dragon Boat Team for fun on the water and potential glory in the 2025 Washington DC Dragon Boat Festival! The festival is on Saturday, May 17, at the Thompson Boat Center in Georgetown. Our team name is the Bakunawas, named after the Philippine moon dragon.

No experience needed to join the team! A dragon boat consists of 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a steersperson (provided by the festival organizer) working in sync to make the boat fly across the water. We'll have 1-2 optional practice sessions (TBD exact dates and times) before race day so you can become familiar with the boat. Whether you've never picked up a paddle before or you're excited at the thought of overtaking another boat, we encourage you to sign up for a wonderful team-building and networking experience.

We'll provide a light breakfast, snacks, lunch, drinks, and a team t-shirt on race day. To join the team, please register here. Members: $20; Non-members: $25.
